Let’s explore Karl Wente Park in Livermore. Karl Wente Park is located in Livermore’s Sunset East neighborhood. Located South of downtown between Holmes and Arroyo just north of Concannon Boulevard. I’m going to share with you the downside of this park that many local parents wish they could change.
If the name sounds familiar to you, you just might be a wine connoisseur. Karl Wente Park opened in 1977 and is named after the grandson of Wente winery founder, Herman Wente. The park is just over three acres and is primarily a large grass area with lots of room to run.
The field is often used for soccer practices. During the soccer season, there is a small, modern tot lot playground geared towards younger children. The climbing structure and slides are perfect for little ones. There was also a three person teeter-totter and a multi-level sandbox with a water feature around the perimeter of the playground. There are three picnic tables with shade sails for the sun.
While it’s nice to have a park in the neighborhood, there is certainly room for improvement. There is zero shade over the playground and it gets super hot in the summer. I’ve seen more than a few kids get their feet burned running barefoot. The worst thing about this park is the playground is really designed for younger kids. It has never made sense to me since it is adjacent to an elementary school and there are a lot of elementary school aged kids playing on the structure before and after school.
This structure is really meant for younger kids. The school has a great playground for elementary aged kids, but it’s fenced off and locked. So if you’re at the park, you can’t use it. LARPD if you’re reading this…we’d love to have a structure added for older kids! This park also has no public bathroom, which is really not uncommon in parks and Livermore.
